Advantages of Oxygen Plasma Cutting of Mild Steel

By Richard Morgan

Labor remains a major contributor to the overall cost of plasma cutting processes. Cutting mild steel using plasma technology is no different. Air-plasma can result in post-cutting operations to prepare the surface for welding such as the removal of nitrides and dross. Added time means added cost. Oxygen plasma provides a higher arc density and will help reduce costs. Benefits include:

  • higher cut speeds – more parts per hour
  • narrower kerf – less wasted material
  • reduces surface nitrides and dross – less preparation
  • smaller heat-affected zone – less warpage, especially with thinner material
  • improved edge squareness – improved weldability Thermal Dynamics offers two systems that are specifically designed for high-speed Oxygen cutting. The Auto-Cut 20O2 and Auto-Cut 30O2 offer 200 and 300 Amp cutting respectively. Combined with Thermal Dynamics’s patented XT Torch consumable technology, the systems are ideal for cutting from gauge to 1.5". Excellent quality cuts will be achieved on both ferrous and non-ferrous materials at higher speeds.
